The story begins with a wave of Greek refugees fleeing Odessa after the Russian Revolution in 1919. Among them is a young orphan girl, Eleni, adopted by a family who eventually raises her. As she blossoms into a woman, she falls deeply in love with her adoptive family's son, Alexis. Their forbidden love, shadowed by a secret, becomes the fragile heart of the tale. Pursued and torn apart, Eleni and Alexis embark on a desperate odyssey across a war-ravaged landscape—through the Greco-Turkish War, the interwar period, and the Nazi occupation of Greece.
